The Handmaiden can be summed up as an erotic thriller that is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the early 1900s. The movie starts with the con man approaching a Korean woman with a heritage of stealing to play as a handmaiden for a young Japanese lady.

The thriller follows the duo trying to con the young Japanese lady and defraud her out of her inheritance. Here Park Chan-wook is trying to best his work in OLDBOY and archives that in many ways. The film captures the innocence and beauty of the characters secluded in an estate in 1900.
