THE BOYS 2 REVIEW

The long-awaited Amazon Prime Original THE BOYS season 2 is here and this is season is rude, crude, and entertaining. The second season doesn’t hold back and manages to one upon the largely positive and satisfying season one. The latest season manages to answer a few of the questions of the first season while creating more questions and puzzles for the viewers to find.

The latest edition of the boys sees the return of the VOUGHT SEVEN superheroes and Billy Butcher along with the surviving cast of the first season. This season broadens the world of the superheroes which might not be different from the real world.

This season of The Boys manages to be gory, offensive, and disrespectful to anything and everything, the reason many fans love the series. It manages to mock hardcore religious fanatics, gender politics, and corporate greed with comedy in a world where the superheroes might not be that different from the humans.

CHARACTERS

This season sees the arrival of Stormfront a new superhero who is powerful and manipulative enough to have the support of people. She has managed to conceal her disturbing past and garner public support through her social media interactions making her more dangerous than the rest of the Vought Seven.

Homelander in the second season is not just a sociopath with power with mommy issues he is more layered than that. Here we discover that he has a son and tries to be a father but doesn’t know, and we can see he genuinely cares for his son. Might not be the best father but at least he tries to be one which might only make things worse.

Billy Butcher is back and in this season we see that his wife is still alive but is raising the child of the homeland. Here we also see his hatred for all supes affect his love for Becca who is imprisoned in a large secret facility with the child.  HUGHIE might have to choose between Starlight and his mission, where his team is always in the cat and mouse game in finding ways to kill the supes and will do whatever it takes even betray Starlight.

This season reveals the LAMPLIGHTER who was teased in season one and shown as a retired superhero. The second season reveals his dark past where he was responsible for the burning to death of two children. Rather than painting him as a bad guy the creators of the shows have shown the character in remorse and trying to right his past wrongs.

Deep has a more interesting story arc where we can see him trying to apologize for mistakes and get the respect back after the sexual misconduct. The Deep tries to find himself and care for his friends in the water only to backfire and become a joke in front of everyone. Though we don’t know his true motivation and if he will repeat his actions or will be capable of change.

Almost all characters have improved and are more nuanced and have to make difficult choices to get what they want. They are not cookie-cutter good or evil and almost all are morally grey will make horrible choices to achieve their goals.

THE BOYS 2 REVIEW

THE BOYS season 2 is not subtle with its message or characters which is a good thing and probably the best thing that they have improved since its first season. Here the characters are not morally Black/White or Good/Evil and most of them can be classified as morally grey. Almost all characters are driven by personal agenda and personal issues of their own and will have to make choices that might be wrong in the hope of a greater good they believe.

The second season is really enjoyable, grand, and entertaining just like the first season. The second season in many ways has improved upon the character development of the important characters as well as a new one introduced in the second season. This flawed superhero world reveals the past of the superheroes as well as those who are trying to kill them.

With great action sequences and set pieces better than the first season this superhero satire series is brilliant, dark, and gory. It is a must-watch for those who like a darker tone and real-world emphasis in their superhero or are sick of the cookie-cutter and formulaic superhero stories.

This is probably the best TV adaptation of a dark superhero set in the real-world after the ‘The Watchmen’. The series is not perfect but is still great in things where it counts, this season is filled with equally suspenseful and WTF moments bettering their first season.

With the crazy finale, we have more questions and characters to look forward to in the upcoming third season. We have to wait and see how crazier this world of the Boys will be after the events of the second season.

MY RATING 8.4/10
